Yakisugi, also known as Shou Sugi Ban in the Western world, is a traditional Japanese method of preserving wood through charring its surface. The word itself translates to "burnt cedar" in Japanese, reflecting the core practice of burning the wood, typically Japanese cypress, for several purposes.
Preservation: The charring process creates a carbonized layer on the wood, making it more resistant to moisture, insects, and even fire. This significantly increases the wood's durability and lifespan, making it ideal for outdoor applications like siding, fencing, and decking.
Aesthetics: The charring creates a visually striking, dark and textured surface with beautiful variations in color and depth. This unique aesthetic is highly sought after in modern architecture and design, adding a touch of rustic elegance to both interior and exterior spaces.
Sustainability: Yakisugi utilises a traditional technique and readily available materials like cypress wood, aligning with principles of sustainable building practices. Additionally, the increased durability translates to less frequent replacement, further reducing resource consumption.
